EMAIL TO PARENTS – September 30, 2020

Hello Dunsmuir families,

We hope that you are all well. We are settling into the school year and new routines at Dunsmuir Middle School. We have appreciated family support of and student commitment to following all of the safety protocols so far this school year. Please know that these protocols will continue to be a focus and priority for the long term under the guidance of the CDC and Provincial Health Officer. While we were unable to host our usual Meet the Teacher evening, please know that teachers will connect with you as time goes on and as needed. Parents/guardians are also always welcome to reach out to your child’s teacher as needed. In the event that you are not receiving emails, please contact the school to update/verify your contact information.

Please see some updates/information/reminders below:

HEALTH CHECK
Please be sure to complete a health check on each of your children prior to sending them to school. Please error on the side of caution as we endeavor to keep everyone as safe as possible.

REMOTE LEARNING
As per district and school communications, September 30th was the final day of the first entry point for Remote Learners. The next entry point will be after Remembrance Day, Thursday, November 12th. We will communicate the process to reengage in face to face instruction (return to Dunsmuir) in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we wish all of our remote learners well and look forward to reconnecting with them upon their eventual return.

ANXIETY COUNSELLING – ONLINE SUPPORT GROUPS

South Island Centre for Counselling and Training has developed three weekly online support groups for children and youth with anxiety, starting October 6th. The groups will run for 8 weeks and are free to join with a limited capacity of 10 participants in each group. During the 8 weeks participants will learn about the symptoms of anxiety, self-care and coping strategies, tools designed to decrease symptoms, and other useful life-skills. They will also have the opportunity to connect with others in their age group and share their experiences. The age groups are as follows: Tuesdays – ages 9-13 , Wednesdays – ages 14-18 and Thursdays – ages 9-25.
Parents of participants will receive one 60 minute free counselling session to discuss their child’s needs and ways to help support them. We are also offering the Triple P online parenting course free of charge starting late October with a limit of 10 participants.
Participants can register online at www.southislandcentre.ca/trainingevents

GO GIRLS
Hi everyone! Our Go Girls in-school program has now been switched to an Online platform (Zoom) and is open to all female-identifying youth aged 11-15 living on Vancouver Island and surrounding communities.
This online program was piloted in March/April/May and went so well that we have expanded the program capacity to 75 participants!
Please look over the attached flyer. It is completely free, run by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria, and facilitated by fully screened (criminal record check and references included) and trained volunteer facilitators. The program runs once week for ten weeks, comes with a free supply kit, and you can sign up with a friend to make things easier! Groups will be starting in the second or third week of October depending on how registration goes.
They meet for 1 hour and 15 minutes virtually over Zoom in either the afternoon or the evening, and do games, crafts, activities, discussions and more! The group is all about reducing stress, promoting active lifestyles, self-love and self-care, spreading kindness and improving social connection in a time of physical distancing!  To register your child online, follow this link: https://victoria.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/gogirls/ or see the attached flyer for the registration link.
Please email me directly for any questions! Thank you! taylor.watson@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca

PARENT PORTAL

We have been working on resetting passwords from the summertime.  We have updated many parent passwords but will not be able to do this on a timely basis with our daily workloads we are responsible for in the office.  So parents, please make note of your login, password, and link to the Parent Portal to reduce the need for reset passwords.  If you have already emailed the Dunsmuir email, please do not email again.  We will get to resetting passwords and Parent Portal issues hopefully next week.
For those parents who can now access the portal, if you see your information (for example, address, phone number or email address) incorrect or needs to be changed, please email our school email at: dunsmuir@sd62.bc.ca. Please do not call our office as we need this email for record keeping purposes. Thank you for your assistance.

SPC CARDS – HAVE ARRIVED!!!!
Please have your student bring a printed receipt of proof of purchase to our office window.  We have received the SPC cards and will send them home to those who have paid online only.  Thank you.

YEARBOOKS
Yearbooks are now available for sale for $40 in school cash online.  We are having a cover contest again this year to win a FREE yearbook!  Design a cover that represents life at DMS during COVID times.  For example, a dragon wearing a mask breathing fire and smoke around the mask.  All designs should be submitted on 8.5 x 11 paper and be very neat and sharp.
We are also accepting art or poetry from students that will be featured in the yearbook (no free book, just recognition that you are awesome!).  Send submissions to dstewart@sd62.bc.ca or bring to room 203 to Mrs. Stewart.
We are also looking for your mask wearing selfies!  Send us your selfies to dstewart@sd62.bc.ca or send them to Mrs. Stewart in google drive.
