HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
On Tuesday, Oct. 31, Dunsmuir Middle School will continue the tradition of allowing students to wear costumes to school.  We will be talking to all of our students regarding appropriate and respectful costumes and encourage them to have fun and be creative.  If a mask or a weapon is a key component to the costume, please have your child leave these items at home.  We have not had issues in the past regarding inappropriate costumes, but if for some reason a costume may make others feel uncomfortable, the student will be asked to change.  We will be hosting some special activities throughout the day -information regarding this event will be coming home soon.  Thank you for your help and support regarding Halloween costumes.

INTERNET/SOCIAL MEDIA AND DIGITAL LITERACY EDUCATION 101 FOR TWEENS, TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS
Darren Laur will be presenting to our whole student body on Thursday, October 19th from 1-3pm.  He will also be presenting to any interested parents on Thursday, October 19th from 7-9pm at Dunsmuir Middle School.  The idea behind his presentation is to help students to pro-actively understand the enabling power of digital technology and mobile communication.  He has also added how to mitigate the sometimes unintended consequences of high risk/undesirable on-line behaviour. During this presentation, Darren Laur would like to encourage all students to bring their cell phones (if they have one) as he will have students pull them out to adjust security settings during the sessions. We hope you can attend the parent presentation that evening.

STUDENT- LED CONFERENCES
On Nov. 23, 2017, Dunsmuir Middle School will be holding our first Student-Led Conference for parents.  We will no longer be running 10 minute interview times with the on-line appointment booking.  A student-led conference is a conference with parents led by the student. Students must be involved in these conferences.  The classroom teacher’s role becomes that of a facilitator. In a student-led conference, students lead parents through a discussion of their work, which is usually organized in a portfolio collection or interactive notebook.  Typically, several conferences are conducted simultaneously in a classroom with family groups seated far enough apart to allow for privacy. The teacher (or teachers) circulates among family groups, stopping long enough to make pertinent comments and answer any questions. Students primarily direct the conversation, which is focused on their work and classroom behaviour.” (Bailey &Guskey, Implementing Student-Led Conferences, 2001) The main purpose of Student-Led Conferences are to celebrate a child’s learning, show growth over time, and provide parents with a better understanding of their child’s learning process.  When students are well prepared over an extended period of time to tell the story of their own success (or lack thereof), they seem to experience a fundamental shift in their internal sense of responsibility for that success. The pride in accomplishment that students feel when they have a positive story to tell can be immensely motivational. The sense of personal responsibility that they feel when anticipating what it will be like to face the music of having to tell their story of poor achievement can also drive them to productive work.” (Stiggins, Phi Delta Kappan, November 1999) More information will come your way as we get closer to this date.
